REI Used Gear:
REI has a great selection of used hiking gear on one of their branch websites. You can shop for anything you possibly need for any hiking adventure. From hiking tops, upper layers, pants, shorts, socks, shoes, backpacks, hiking poles, and the list goes on.
Once you find the desired item, click on it to find the price, condition, and full details list. REI breaks their condition levels into excellent condition, lightly worn, moderately worn, and well worn. If the condition is worn, there generally will be a blurb with any flaws the product might have.
The price of the product in new condition will be listed alongside the “used” price. It will generally show you the percentage saved versus the new product. Here you will see whether you are snagging a killer deal or just getting a small percentage off. Obviously, the more worn the product is, the better deal you can get. But don’t forget factor in how much life it may have left.
The flaw in this method is the picture shows the brand new product, versus the product in its used condition. Therefore, it can be hard to judge whether or not it’s too worn or not for your liking. Although, they do offer a satisfaction guarantee. You get 30 days to try the product, and if you are not satisfied, then REI will take the product back. Although, you are responsible for the return label fees.
All-in-all, REI Used Gear has a great model for reusing and recycling old gear. There is a great selection of products on their website. And honestly so many great options to snag an awesome deal on some used hiking gear.
Patagonia Worn Wear:
Jake and I personally love Patagonia for their light jacket layers. We both have a nano-puff that we bring along on almost every camping & hiking adventure. They are the perfect layer for when the temperatures drop and you want to stay warm!
We also have various other clothing items from Patagonia and can both vouch for their quality. And we have worn many of these items on some rugged adventures. Each item holds up to its quality, besides the normal wear and tear that happens to every piece of clothing over the years.
And so by shopping Patagonia Worn Wear, you are just getting someone’s quality Patagonia gear that needs to be loved by someone else. Often clothes are grown out of, and with Patagonia’s Worn Wear Trade-In program, people can send in their used gear and get credit for new gear.
Once you find the product you like, you will find the condition the product is in and its scar story. The scar story gives a brief story of some defects the product might have. Such as discoloration, loose threads, etc. Most products will either be in excellent condition, great condition, or good condition.
Patagonia Worn Wear has Ironclad guarantee. If you’re not satisfied with a product after purchase, you can return it or discuss the problem with info@wornwear.com. If the product has normal wear and tear, they will repair the product at a reasonable charge.
The North Face renewed
If you love The North Face Brand, then this is one of the best websites to buy used hiking gear.
The North Face Renewed goes through an extensive renewal process. They go through an 8 step process and have 6 quality checks before a product goes up online.
First, two steps are sorting them and determining what should be done with the products. Products that are too far from an easy repair will either be upcycled, donated, or recycled. For any products that make it into the renew sale, a technician will diagnose the problem.
Then the products are run through a barcode test to see if there are any known defects to the original product. If there aren’t any defects, then the products go through an extensive cleaning. The North Face uses the Tersus CO2 cleaning system or high-capacity commercial washing machines to clean gear to factory-grade standards.
The products are then inspected and repaired to a like-new condition. Lastly, the products go through their finishing touches. Which entails removing any lint, loose threads, wrinkles, etc. Finally, they are ready for a quality assurance test. Once the item passes the test, it will be put online for purchase! The North Face Renewed offers free returns and a one-year warranty.
Honestly, with this extensive renewal process, it seems like a no-brainer to snag a used item versus finding a new item. Once you’re ready to shop, you can search for products by condition: like new, reconditioned, or remade.
For products that can’t be repaired to their normal condition go into a collection called REMADE. Here you will find products that have a unique touch. Most of the products will have a unique patchwork where there was a defect to the product. Which personally I find kind of fun!
Ebay
Ebay has been around for many years and can be a solid place to buy some used hiking gear. It began as an auction site for peer-to-peer sales. But it has long since expanded to include a ‘Buy It Now’ that allows you to skip the auction and secure an item immediately. And Ebay also allows many larger sellers and legit stores to sell products on their site.
If it is an auction, you basically put the lowest price you are willing to pay and then other people interested can bid a dollar amount above that. Sometimes there are no other bidders and you can walk away with an awesome deal on select items. Then, the seller sends the item to you and you are ready to have a great hiking adventure!
Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace has become one of my favorite ways to buy used hiking gear. It does help if you are in an area where hiking is popular. Facebook Marketplace has added a shipping feature, so really you can shop from anywhere in the country and have the products sent right to your home. But personally, I like shopping the local-only page first, because then I can physically see the product before purchasing.
If you don’t find the used hiking gear you were looking for on the local page, then you can open it up to +Shipping. Then, you might possibly find the used hiking gear you were looking for and just have to pay an additional small fee for the shipping costs.
Facebook does use buyer protection, so you can buy products with confidence. And if the product doesn’t ever arrive, or is broken or arrives different than what was described, you can file a claim and get your money back. This is why Facebook Marketplace is one of the best websites to buy used hiking gear.
Craigslist
Craigslist is another great website to buy used hiking gear. It is moreso a local pickup website, but some sellers are willing to ship for the right price. But it is basically a peer marketplace, and it is more prevalent to scams. Therefore, it’s not personally one of my favorite websites to buy used hiking gear.
Craigslist breaks up the website into states, and then again into specific regions. Once you choose the area where you are located, then you can search tons of different categories. Or simply use the search bar and type in hiking gear.
Craigslist will then show you the most relevant products and typically the items that are closest in proximity to you. If there aren’t a ton of items, then they will branch out to nearby areas and show you those products. You can usually email, text or call the seller to see if the product is still available and set up a time to meet up and get the used hiking gear.
Do use caution when purchasing from Craigslist. I always try and meet up in a public setting, rather than at the person’s house directly. And bring a friend along for the purchase. Additionally, NEVER send money before physically seeing the product. If they want you to pay up-front, then chances are it’s a scam and you don’t want to be involved in that, so just move on and find different used hiking gear!
Gear Trade
Gear Trades’ biggest goal is to keep used gear out of landfills and get it in some other adventurers’ hands. Consumers have developed an easy-come, easy-go mentality. But many of the products we might not need anymore or think are useless to us shouldn’t go to the landfill. These products should just make their way into another adventure enthusiast’s hands. It will be worth so much more going into someone else’s hands versus the landfills.
So, Gear Trade created a used gear company where people can sell the products they no longer want or use. Gear Trade not only has great used hiking gear options, but they have also used gear for almost every outdoor recreational activity.
Sellers can either list the item themselves or send the product to Gear Trade and Gear Trade will access the value and pay the seller when someone purchases their item.
Gear Trade has a great selection of items, making it one of the best websites to buy used hiking gear. By clicking on the item you fancy, you can find out all the necessary details such as brand, model, condition, and who the item is sold by. If the seller has sold products on Gear Trade before, you can see their star rating, estimated shipping time, and return policy.
The listing also shows the original price of the product as if it were “brand new” and typically what percentage off you will be getting compared to the “new” price.
If you like the item, you can either add it to your cart and proceed to purchase or make an offer if you think it is priced too high. Gear Trade is a brilliant company that will help create less waste on this earth and help recycle used camping gear!
Out & Back
Out & Back has a great selection of used hiking gear to choose from. Their website provides the condition of the products and the necessary details. On the Out & Back website, they show the percentage off you get compared to the retail price for the product.
I do find their website to be a bit more vague than others. But Out & Back still has a great selection of products that are lightly used or practically new hiking gear.
How the website works is the sellers with the used gear take pictures and tell Out & Back the quality and as many details as they can. Out & Back will then make an instant cash offer, and if the seller agrees to the offer, they send their gear to Out & Back and voila. You now have the option to purchase the used hiking gear via their website!
