“Dual Zone” Freezer vs “In-Compartment” Freezer

Not all fridges with a freezer are created equal.

The best ones are Dual Zone units that have two separate zones, one for refrigeration and one for freezing.  They usually have separate controls for each zone, allowing you to set a specific temp for each section.  This gives you the most control.

The other type of fridges with a freezer are “In-Compartment freezers.  This means that the freezer compartment is within the refrigerator compartment.  They rarely have a separate temperature control for the freezer compartment.  This makes it a little more tricky to control the temperature in each compartment.  Things that are close to the freezer compartment may freeze by accident.  And In-Compartment freezers usually cant get as cold as Dual-Zone freezers, at least not without lowering the temperature of the refrigerator section too much.

Beware Of The False Fridge / Freezer

Some units may be advertised as “Fridge Freezer”, but only have a single compartment.  This means that the unit can be operated as a fridge *OR* freezer, but NOT BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY.  So just beware of this somewhat misleading marketing.  If you want just a freezer, and don’t need any refrigeration then this can work for you.

Two Separate Units?

Occasionally, people will have two completely separate units.  One is strictly the fridge, and then they have another unit that is just the freezer.  This can work, but it is not common.  It’s nearly always a better use of power and space to have the fridge and freezer working together within the same unit.

Power + Cooling Types

The only type of fridges that I recommend use compressor technology for cooling.  They are by far the best solution for campervans or other mobile living.  (Absorption is not very energy efficient unless you use propane or grid power.  And Thermoelectric isn’t powerful enough for having a full-time freezer.)

And running a fridge with 12volt or 24volt direct current (DC) is the most efficient.  Some fridges with a freezer for campervans might also be able to run with 120v AC, but it’s not as efficient to convert DC to AC with an inverter.

So all the fridges with a freezer that I recommend are compressor fridges that can be powered with 12v or 24v DC.

While some of these fridges can be powered from your vehicle’s battery, it is only while the engine is running, or for a few hours after.  For 24/7 fridge operation, its important to have a separate campervan battery and some way to charge it (e.i. solar, battery isolator, gas generator.)

If you absolutely must have a freezer in your campervan, then it narrows down your fridge options.  But there are still a wide variety of types and brands to choose from.  These are our choices for the best fridges with a freezer for different budget levels.  While the best options are very expensive, we feel that you get what pay for.  I would caution against going with the cheapest option because the poor quality and lack of warranty coverage could end up costing you more money and frustration.

We love having a freezer in our campervan, there’s nothing like having some ice cream or an icy cocktail on a hot day.  For us, it was well worth the extra cost for a fridge with freezer.
