Best Things To Do In Ouray, CO Year-Round
Ouray experiences all 4 seasons and thrives differently in each. So whether you are passing through on your way to a ski resort in winter or coming for some outdoor adventures in summer, Ouray has many different activities to keep tourists entertained.
Soak In The Ouray Hot Springs
There is nothing better than taking a relaxing soak after a big day of adventures. These natural pools have been used for hundreds of years from the early Ute Native American Tribe to modern-day tourists.
Guests have access to five pools, but only three are headed by geothermal heat. One huge perk to soaking here is the lack of sulfur which makes these hot springs odorless. The water is sourced from Ouray Box Canyon Waterfall, the aquafer in Fellin Park, and Weehawken Spring.
The natural mineral pools range from 74-106 degrees Fahrenheit (23-41 Celsius).
The natural hot springs are categorized into two different sections. An adults-only section for peace and relaxation. And a family-friendly zone that has 2 water slides, a climbing wall, and an inflatable obstacle course.
Additionally, there is the Ouray hot springs pool where guests can take some laps for exercise. Plus a fitness center if you want to pump some iron.
If you are looking for more hot springs in town, guests might also want to visit the Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa.

The town of Ouray might not be the largest town, but it certainly has some historic charm. Main Street is like a walking piece of history witnessing old unique buildings. Ouray is part of the National Historic District.

Summer Things To Do In Ouray, CO:
Summer is an excellent time to visit Ouray, CO. Temperatures are usually in the comfortable 70’s Fahrenheit (21-26 Celsius).
Hike up to Ice Lake and Island Lake:
First on the list of fun things to do in Ouray, CO is Ice Lake and Island Lake. This is one of my all-time favorite hikes in Colorado. It is a challenging hike, but the views from the start of the hike to the very end are some of the most breathtaking views you might ever see.
The hike is 6.5 miles with 2736 feet elevation change. This hike is a lollipop loop, so you can choose which lake you come upon first. We decided to hike up to Island Lake first and loop around to Ice Lake for the grand finale.
Seriously, these two lakes are two of the coolest I’ve ever seen in Colorado. Island Lake is an aqua green color with a beautiful rocky island in the middle, surrounded by lush green on the mountains.
Blue Lakes is a stunning aqua blue color that simply takes your breath away the first time you see it up on the ridge. During the summer months, it is surrounded by lush green mountains, beautiful wildflowers, and epic scenery to surround you.

Hike to Columbine Lake:
Columbine Lake is another stunning aqua blue lake in the area near Ouray, CO. The reason it doesn’t top Ice Lake and Island Lake is because there is only 1 lake, versus 2. But it is still a really incredible lake hike in Southwest Colorado. It is another challenging hike up to the top, so be ready for a full-day adventure up to the lake.
The hike is 8.3 miles with 2,933 feet of elevation change. You start hiking through a dense steep forest and come out above tree line. You then climb an open tundra to the lake with stunning mountain views surrounding you.

Visit Box Canyon Falls:
Box Canyon is located right in Ouray, CO. It is a popular destination since it can be accessed right from town. There is a $5 entrance fee to go into Box Canyon, which helps limit how many people can see the falls at one time.
The parking lot is small, so you might need to wait for someone to leave before snagging a spot. The hike is short, so people come and go often.
There are two different trails in Box Canyon Falls Park: Lower Box Canyon Falls and Upper Box Canyon Falls.
Lower Box Canyon is .3 miles with 26 feet elevation change. The stairs to reach Lower Box Canyon Falls are located right outside the visitor center.
Upper Box Canyon Falls Trail is .4mi with 203 feet elevation change. The stairs up toward Upper Box Canyon Falls are also located right outside the visitor center.

Summit Mt. Sneffels:
If you want to feel like you are on top of the world, then Mt. Sneffels is the hike for you! It is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Ouray, CO. But it is definitely a challenging hike, to say the least. You will be summiting a mountain, so be prepared for a steep climb to the top.
There are 3 different ways you can summit Mt. Sneffel’s. Yankee Boy Basin, Blue Lakes Trail, and Upper Blue Lakes Trailhead Parking Lot. All being challenging.
Yankee Boy Basin is the route Jake and I took, which is 7.1 miles with 3,320 feet elevation change. It is a very challenging hike, but the main challenge is the last mile climbing 1,765 feet. Which is where the hike begins for someone able to off-road drive to Upper Blue Lakes Trailhead Parking Lot.
The last way you can summit Mt. Sneffels is from Blue Lakes Trail. It is 13 miles with 5,501 feet elevation change. If you are interested in backpacking, then this is the route we would highly suggest. As you can see 3 stunning blue lakes along your route. But if you just plan to day hike to Mt. Sneffel’s, Blue Lakes Trail would be a long, strenuous day hike.

Hike Up To The Blue Lakes:
Well, reading from the title of this section, you can probably guess that it is yet another blue lake! Blue Lakes is an awesome hike near Ouray, CO. While most people just hike to Lower Blue Lake, there are two other blue lakes if you continue on the hike. Which can also be seen from the summit of Mt. Sneffels (listed above).
Blue Lakes hike is 6.2 miles with 2,217 feet elevation change if you are just hiking to Lower Blue Lake. It is a very aqua blue color which is surrounded by beautiful lush green covered mountains. During the summer months, there are also stunning wildflowers that surround the lake shore.
If you are looking for the “easier” hike to a beautiful aqua blue lake in the area, then this one will be a bit easier than the others on the list. But the hike still isn’t a walk in the park as you climb 2,217 feet.

Drive The Million Dollar Highway:
One of the most epic things to do in Ouray, CO for everybody is take a scenic drive on the Million Dollar Highway. It is simply one of the most stunning drives in all of Colorado to witness the beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
The “Million Dollar Highway” is along Highway 550 which stretches as far as 305 miles. But, the famous stretch of the Million Dollar Highway is about 25 miles and runs from Silverton to Ouray.
You will want to have your eyes peeled for this drive as it is simply breathtaking. My suggestion is to visit during summer or fall. During summer you will see lush green mountains with flowers blooming. And during the fall you can see some of the beautiful aspen trees changing their colors glimmering in the sun.
But even if you miss these two spectacular seasons, the drive will still be one of the prettiest you see. Take the adventure up a notch a learn about Colorado’s southwest history on this self-guided audio tour.
There are many pull-offs along the highway if you want to stop and grab a photo along the way.
Take A Scenic Drive to Animas Forks

Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour:
Bachelor Syracuse was an old mining town north of downtown Ouray. Early travelers settled in Ouray because of the rich deposits of gold. The Bachelor Syracuse Mine was in operation from the late 1800s until the mid-1900s.

Also stop in to their cafe before your tour to fuel yourself with a tasty breakfast.
Ouray Perimeter Trail
The Ouray Perimeter Trail is a stunning loop hike that climbs the mountainous perimeter of town. Hikers get to witness amazing views of various peaks along the hike, while still being in reach of town.
This hike is a 6-mile loop that climbs 1500 ft in elevation. The trail starts on the north part of town.
Cascade Falls
Cascade Falls is one of the most popular things to do in Ouray, CO. It’s located on the east part of town and can really be seen from many different places. Therefore, encouraging many people to want to get closer.
The hike to a better vantage point is actually pretty short. But do note it is very steep. All tourists should be able to make it, but might just need to take it at their own pace. The hike is .2 miles and climbs 75 ft.
Black Bear Pass:
An extreme off-road adventure in Ouray is a narrow 4×4 drive on Black Bear Pass. This infamous drive starts at 11,018 feet, at the summit of Red Mountain Pass and switchbacks up nearly 13,000 ft.
The drive should only be done by experienced off-roaders. Most of the trail is moderate, but does get narrow and difficult above Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride.
If you don’t want to take the trek with your own vehicle, there are a few local tours in town.

Ouray Ice Park:
The Ouray Ice Park is one of the most thrilling activities in winter and a popular hub for ice climbers. Back in the early 90’s two locals dreamt up a plan to create their own ice park in the Uncompahgre Gorge.
With much trial and error, the town created a man-made ice climbing park in a natural gorge. This popular Ouray attraction brings in many tourists looking to climb this famous area.
The park is free to use as long as you follow these rules. Or if you don’t have any experience, you can book a half-day tour with a professional guide.
