Houseboating on Lake Powell

One of the coolest places on the border of Utah and Arizona is the town of Page. It’s a small town, but offering so many unique things to do in Page, AZ! Page has some of the easiest marinas to hop onto Lake Powell and many short, yet stunning hikes nearby.

But due to its growing popularity and stunning views many of the “usually free” activities require a small fee. So to enjoy Page, AZ you might need a little extra cash to enjoy it to the fullest, but it will be so worth it!

Page is best visited in the spring and fall, when the weather is warm. If you want to avoid the crowds it’s best to visit in winter, early spring, or late fall. Do note that the temperatures in the summer are in the upper 90’s, and many of the activities in the area are not shaded, so the sun can be tolling. Here are the tops things to do in Page, AZ.

Lake Powell:

Page is most known for it’s easy access to the famous Lake Powell, which stretches 161,390 acres (that’s HUGE). And it is truly one of Jake’s and my favorite places on this earth!

We now have an annual house boating trip with friends that is probably one of the most fun vacations Jake and I have ever been on! Most of Lake Powell is in Utah, but some of the easiest marinas to access lie in Page, AZ. If you can coordinate a houseboating trip with family or friends, we HIGHLY encourage it.

Water Sports on Lake Powell

Ultimately just seeing Lake Powell from the edge is legendary. But, after looking at it from the shore I’m sure you will grow a desire to get out on the water and explore deeper into the canyons, like we did.

In our opinion, Lake Powell is best seen by boat, although airplane or helicopter would be pretty epic as well. Book a helicopter tour with Get Your Guide.

There are plenty of marina’s in the area you can rent a boat from. We have rented through Wahweap Marina a couple of times and would highly suggest the company!

A popular destination many people who just want to day trip on Lake Powell visit Rainbow Bridge National Monument. It’s one of the world’s largest known natural bridges and a sacred place to the Navajo People. Rainbow Bridge National Monument can only be accessed by boat or long 14 miles hike (do note you will need a permit to hike through Navajo Nation Land). So you can often find this sacred place less crowded.

If you do rent a boat be sure to rent a pair of water skis or a wakeboard if you don’t already own them. We can assure you will have the best time and it will be by far one of the coolest places you can ski or wakeboard!

You can also rent jet skis, which can be a super fun way to explore the slot canyons of Lake Powell.

But if your “ballin on a budget” then one of the best things to do in Page AZ is to rent a kayak. It’s much cheaper than renting a boat or jet ski. We suggest renting from Antelope Point Marina so you can get closer to accessing one of the side slot canyons!

Antelope Canyon:

I’m sure you’ve seen a famous picture from inside Antelope Canyon. The unique wave-like structures that align the canyon walls. There are two entrances into Antelope Canyon: upper canyon and lower canyon. They are actually a side canyon of Lake Powell. But you can only visit them via a guided tour for both Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.

The local tour guide company we used for Antelope Canyon was Ken’s Tour’s. But there is also Dixie Ellis Lower Antelope Canyon ToursNavajo Tours, and a few other private tour companies.

You can also book a tour through Viator or Get Your Guide. These tour companies will help connect you will an available local tour (because during peak season, tours are often sold out).

Jake and I decided to go with Lower Antelope Canyon because it was cheaper and easier to access. We heard Upper Antelope Canyon was a little better for photography, but we feel there were plenty of great photo opportunities inside lower Antelope.

Horseshoe Bend:

One of the most famous things to do in Page, AZ is hike to Horseshoe Bend. It’s one of the most mesmerizing natural wonders in the world. But, beware, it does get super busy and there is no shade along the trail.

The hike to Horseshoe Bend is a short 1.5 mile hike with 242 feet elevation to another stunning view down Glen Canyon looking down at the Colorado River. There is a $10 fee to park in the lot, but I promise it will be worth it.

If you are into photography this is a good spot for a wide-angle lens. We highly suggest doing Horseshoe Bend during sunset to get that magical color of the clouds. If you hike during sunrise, the sun will come up directly behind you, making the bend and Colorado River in the shadows.

Or if you want the Colorado River and epic Horseshoe Bend to be in direct sunlight, then mid morning to early afternoon is a great time to visit. But do expect the biggest amount of crowds during this time. It’s a great place to pack a picnic or a good drink to sit and enjoy the view.

Lone Rock Beach:

Lone Rock Beach Campground

The Campground at Lone Rock Beach lines Wahweap Bay with beachfront access. The beach is best known for the Lone Rock that sits in the middle of the bay. Lone Rock Beach is especially great if you have an RV or plan to tent camp! During the summer months, the shoreline gets packed with RV’s and boats.

Jake and I have camped here several times and it has been great every time! There are flushable toilets that align the beach about 200 feet from the shore. Do note that it can get extra windy at times and the sand can be annoying if you don’t have a shield from it.

You will also need an America the Beautiful Annual Pass or pay a $30 entrance fee into Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (good for a week). There is an additional charge of $14 per vehicle per night if you plan to camp at Lone Rock Beach. You can stay up to 14 consecutive days.

And even if you don’t plan to camp you can just spend the day out here and enjoy the view! You will then only have to pay the entrance fee into Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. If you have paddleboards or kayaks it’s fun to go out there and see just how big Lone Rock truly is.

Glen Canyon Dam:

Glen Canyon Dam

If you are coming into town from the East, then you will automatically run into the Glen Canyon Dam and must drive over it to get to the town of Page. The Glen Canyon Dam is what blocks the Colorado River to form Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. The dam stands over 700 feet tall.

If you want to get a closer look, you can stop at the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook. It’s one of the most amazing things, to see the large wall that creates such a beautiful landmark.

You can also stop in the Carl Hayden Visitor Center to learn the history behind the Glen Canyon Dam and what it’s future holds.

Personally Jake and I like to stay in Wahweap because you get closer access to the water. So we suggest Lake Powell Resort or Lakeview Haven. But there are tons of great options closer to town. Check out this helpful map below.

We love to compare hotel prices on Booking, Expedia, and Hotels to find the best deals! Or if you prefer Vacation Rentals, use VRBO to find the perfect home away from home.

Attractions Nearby Page, AZ:

The Wave

About an hour away, you can access The Wave Trailhead. The Wave is definitely one of the most visually stunning geologic wonders of the world. But permits are hard to come by because they only allow 20 people to hike it per day. If you are planning this trip in advance, then I would apply for the permit lottery online. Check out our post about Hiking The Wave for all the details.

Zion National Park

A little less than 2 hours away you will enter into Zion National Park which is one of the coolest National Parks in the United States. There is so much to do within this park, but some of our favorites are The Narrows, The Subway and Observation Point

Monument Valley

Monument Valley is a classic and picturesque stop in Arizona which is about 2 hours away. You can also venture in Monument Valley Tribal Park to view the rocks up close and personal. The cost is $20 per vehicle. Be sure to drive the beautiful 17-mile scenic loop throughout the park.

Grand Canyon National Park

Last but not least is, of course, The Grand Canyon which is less than 2 hours away. There is a North and South Entrance which are both about equal in distance from Page, AZ Each offering stunning views above the rim, and access to many amazing and challenging trails in the Grand Canyon.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

If you enjoyed these top things to do in Page, AZ, then you are going to also love the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This area is very remote, and one of the best places to stock up and spend a few days out on a camping trip.

One of the coolest parts, is you can actually see Lake Powell from a few different hikes in the area. Reflection Canyon is one of our all time favorite backpacking trips. But you can also drive to hole in the wall, which used to be where the Native Americans transported items from one side of the canyon to the other. Check out our ultimate guide for the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.
